The conditions that can cause post nasal drip

Nasal mucosa releases a quart of mucus everyday in regular healthy condition. This regular secretion of mucus helps in the following manners:

  • When we inhale air it moves in through nostrils where mucus makes the air moist
  • Keeps nose and throat moist
  • Traps foreign bodies like dust, smoke, etc. and stops them entering into the lungs
  • Helps reduce infections by trapping foreign particles

These are the benefits of mucus but when mucus secretion is increased then it results in post nasal drip. Excess mucus then accumulated in back of the nose causing dripping down the back of the throat.

Though, there are many causes, one of the major causes of post nasal drip is nasal irritants. Excessive nasal irritants like dust, pollen can cause the body to increase nasal production to trap the increased nasal irritants. These irritants in turn caused the lining to be irritated and inflamed.

Due to inflammation of nasal lining, patient cannot blow nose properly causing the excess mucus accumulating in back of the nose. When excess mucus is accumulated in back of the nose, it starts dripping down the back of the throat which results in coughing to clear the excess mucus.

Below is a list of some of the other causes of post nasal drip:

  • Cold and flu – During colds and flu the secretion of mucus is increased. This excess secretion of mucus may cause excessive clearing of the throat and blowing of the nose.

  • Dry air – This may causes the mucus to become dry or thick and block up nasal passages causing pain and pressure.

  • Allergies may results in a running nose, sore throat, and watery eyes. During and allergic attack there is increase production of mucus and an inflammatory response to allergens. This inflammatory response causes the mucus lining to become inflamed, trapping mucus in the cavities and the excess mucus to flow down the back of the throat.

  • Medication – Medicinal side-effects can also results into excessive secretion of mucus. Medicines taken to treat blood pressure, birth, and during pregnancy are found to cause post nasal drip.
